Power packs that assist an attendant in pushing a manual wheelchair have been around for years. While this is a great option for some people, others want to remain independent and when mobility and strength is impaired, this can be difficult. Step forward the new generation of power packs – the power add-ons.
These add-ons are relatively new to the market and recently we have seen the introduction of the E move and E Drive from the new division of Electric Mobility, Rascal Rehab, which now compete with the Efix and E motion from Alber.
With a power unit located in the hub of the wheel, the Rascal E-move is operated when you push the rim on the wheels giving you increased forward motion. This is a great addition for those who struggle to operate their chairs themselves, giving the user a greater range and more maneuverability, while still technically remaining a self-propelling chair.
The E-move works a little like power steering on a car – it adds extra power to make turning the wheel easier and less strenuous. It only adds as much power as you need, too – so if you push hard it will add a lot of power and if you just need a slight manoeuvring push it will add a little extra to help you out. So don’t worry, it won’t send you into hyperspeed when you just wanted to edge a little forward!
The E-move will fit to almost any wheelchair and is fabulously easy to fit. What’s more, it’s lightweight and small for packing away, too. Oh and there’s a rollback delay, so you won’t roll backwards when going uphill!
The E-drive transforms your self-propelling chair into a power version with a simple-to-use joystick. The unit consists of wheels, a battery back and a control unit that can be added on to almost any wheelchair and is easily uncoupled should you wish to revert to manual use.
This is a great option for those who don’t want to commit to a fully electric wheelchair, but would like a little added power for their day to day activities. One of the best things about the E-drive is that it can easily be uncoupled, allowing the user to revert to manual propulsion when they want.
Lightweight and easy to assemble, we really can’t find fault with the E-drive wheelchair add-on, so why not give it a go?!
These power add-ons are a great way of having the benefits of an electric wheelchair on your manual one, a concept which is growing exponentially in popularity. Both add-ons are transportable and versatile – giving you a lightweight, transportable electric wheelchair tailored to you. They’ve been designed specifically to give you the best of both worlds.
